Warner Bros. Discovery Introduces New Streaming Platform Max

MEDIA – Prior to the launch of Warner Bros. Merging two streaming services presents a significant challenge. As a result, the company dedicated 12 months to planning to create a unified platform that caters to all types of customers.

Technical and Functional Improvements

WBD has a lot to prove with Max, given its mixed reputation with the HBO Max app, which experienced several outages and issues with playback, sound, and bugs. To enhance performance, Saxena stated that Max uses multiple CDNs (content delivery networks) to provide better resilience for the app. CDNs are a set of servers that cache and deliver content to end-users nearby while ensuring content security.

Max employs four CDNs – Amazon CloudFront, Google’s Cloud CDN, Akamai, and Fastly – and AWS as its primary cloud provider.

Major Improvements

Besides performance, the main improvements WBD focused on include:

  • Personalization features
  • A streamlined navigation menu
  • An enhanced experience for children
  • A simplified sign-up and payment process

Max will offer individual user profiles designed to provide more personalized recommendations based on their viewing habits. Recommendations are based on human curation and machine learning.

Max will also feature a new content navigation menu at the top of the screen, genre hubs, and dedicated content pages for major brands owned by WBD, such as HBO, Discovery Channel, Food Network, HGTV, and more.

Children’s Experience and Payment Options

Max will allow parents to set new profile options for their children, such as toddlers, older children, preteens, or teenagers.

Max users will also receive new alerts informing them of payment failures. Additionally, PayPal is now a payment option.

Live Content and Future Projects

Whitworth also mentioned that the engineering team built a “truly impressive” live platform that can “stream any type of live content.” The company has not yet announced which live sports events will be launched on Max.

Regarding future projects, Whitworth did not want to provide details but emphasized that the company is exploring “better opportunities to find content when you’re in the video player itself.”

Max is scheduled to launch in the United States on May 23.
